 Mr. Barry D. Whalen, 73, of Fountain City, passed away at home on Saturday, August 3.

 Barry was born in Richmond, Indiana on August 7, 1950, to Rev. Robert Keith & Geneva D. McClurg Whalen Shiverdecker. He was a 1969 graduate of Richmond High School.

 Barry enlisted in the US Navy and received his Honorable Discharge after four years of service. He accepted a position with the former Richmond Gas Corp. and enjoyed a long career as an engineer before retiring from Vectren in 2014. 

 Barry enjoyed doing things with his family. He spent his time helping his kids work on projects with their homes, taking in his grandchildren’s activities and boating on Dale Hollow Lake. He enjoyed the trips taken to visit his family in Conroe, Texas. He also enjoyed tooling around in his 1967 Chevelle and had plans to bring his 1950 Chevy pickup back to life.

 Barry will be missed by his wife of 50 years, the former Deborah J. “Debbie” Schultz, who he married on Dec. 22, 1973; daughters, Jill Phillips & her husband, Frazier; Staci Wood & her fiancé, Lee Reed; son, Brian Whalen & his wife, Katie; 10 grandchildren, Sydney & husband, Colton, Cullen, Natalie & husband, Gabe, Ashton, Karsen, Dylan, Lily, Khyler, Beckham and Harper; one great-grandson, Colson Barry John, who was born hours before Barry’s passing; sister, Kathy Whalen; sister-in-law, Debbie Whalen; brothers, Phillip Whalen, Allen Whalen, Michael Whalen & his wife, Donna; and Robert Whalen; brothers-in-law, Gary Schultz and Gayle Schultz & his wife, Betsy; special friends, Allen & Connie Weiss, Fred & Linda Sherrow and Sandy Reynolds; and several nieces and nephews.

 Barry was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Randy Whalen; sister, Karen Whalen; and his best friend, Mike Reynolds.

 Services for Barry will be private. Interment will take place in Willow Grove Cemetery, Fountain City.
