Mrs. Betty Janice Newman Benner, 95, of Fountain City, passed away peacefully on Tuesday morning, March 6, at Brookdale of Richmond.
She was born on April 11, 1922 in Richmond, Indiana to James Howard and Frances J. Berry Newman and was a 1940 graduate of Whitewater High School. She was united in marriage to John W. Benner on June 8, 1945. Their marriage of over 72 years was blessed with two daughters and their extended family.
Mrs. Benner lived in the Fountain City area most of her life and was a member of the Whitewater Christian Church. She worked at International Harvester early in life. She later worked at the Palladium-Item, Second National Bank and Rosaâs Office Supply before retiring. She enjoyed sewing, crocheting and traveling with John in their RV. She enjoyed spending time with her family, especially teaching her granddaughters how to cook.
Mrs. Benner will be missed by her husband of 72 years, John; daughters & sons-in-law, Saundra & Marvin Jackson and Janice & Bob McGuire; granddaughters, Jennifer & Dan Capps, Krista & Greg Hayes and Amanda & Caleb Alexander; great-grandchildren, John Bedel, Matt Bedel, Kalee Hayes, Camryn Alexander and Coleman Alexander; brother-in-law, Jan Vogelsong; step-daughter & son-in-law, Joan & Keith Warner and family; nieces & nephews.
Mrs. Benner was preceded in death by her parents, sisters, Sue Vogelsong, Carol Shonebarger and Ellen Weirick; and brother, Joel Newman.
A funeral ceremony will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 10 in Smith-McQuiston & Webster Funeral Home, 321 US 27 South, Fountain City. Interment will follow in Willow Grove Cemetery.
Family and friends may gather for visitation from 5-7 p.m. on Friday, March 9, at the funeral home.
