Donald E. Petro, Jr., 83, of Fountain City, passed away peacefully while surrounded by his family on Saturday, November 7, 2015 at Rosebud Village in Richmond.
Don was born in Union County, Indiana on April 22, 1932 to John T. and Mary Elizabeth Creek Petro, both of whom preceded him in death. He was a 1950 graduate of Short High School in Liberty. He served in the US Navy from January 1952 until December 1955.
In 1956, he followed in his fatherâs footsteps to become a second generation Trooper in the Indiana State Police, retiring in 1976 after 20 years of service. He then became Director of Transportation for Richmond Community Schools.
In 1979, Don met and married Linda L. Gibbs. He attended Fountain City Wesleyan Church, where he served the Lord in many ways. He enjoyed people and never met a stranger. He also loved traveling, which he and Linda did frequently. They loved taking cruises with many friends they met while square dancing with Hoosier Corners Square Dance Club.
Don will be missed by his wife of 36 years, Linda Petro; daughters, Vonda (Stephe) Wilson, Mary Ellen (Murray) Williamson, Lisa Umbright; step-children, Brian Gibbs, Lisa (Danny) Newland, and Lori (Ken) Braden; 11 grandchildren, Kerri and Adam Staab, Allison and Natalie Tresslar, Anna (James) Knipp, Katie Wilson, Hannah and Jacob Newland, and Nicolas, Daniel and Eli Braden; and 3 great-grandchildren, and his brother, John âTedâ (Kay) Petro, Jr.
In addition to his parents, Don was preceded in death by his brother, Jerry Petro, and son-in-law, Douglas Tresslar.
A celebration of Donâs life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, November 13, at the Fountain City Wesleyan Church, 5600 US 27 North, Richmond, with visitation beginning at 10:30 a.m.
