John E. Conway, 85, of Fountain City, passed away peacefully on Tuesday morning, December 3, in the warmth and comfort of his own home.
John was born on November 16, 1939, near Fountain City, Indiana to Frederick M. & Thelma Ada (Jackson) Conway. He was a 1958 graduate of Fountain City High School. John married the former Joyce Nicholson on April 17, 1960. Their 64-year marriage was blessed with 3 children.
John was a retired truck driver who spent many years with IRC&D Trucking before later driving for Hockersmith. He and Joyce started square dancing in the early 1990s, often going out dancing 5 nights a week. He was a faithful member of the Centerville Church of the Nazarene and Country Harvest Cowboy Church. He also spent many hours helping at the Whosoever Ministries Thrift Store in Fountain City, one of many places around town he could be seen driving back and forth from in his golf cart. He was a humble recipient of the Indiana Golden Hoosier Award, established to recognize outstanding older Hoosiers for service to their community.
John will be missed by his wife of 64 years, Joyce Conway; children, Denver Conway & wife, Jamie; Doug Conway, and Darla Conway-Combs & her husband, Richard; 14 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren; brother, Charlie Conway; his ever-present canine companion, Mia; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
John was preceded in death by his parents, grandson, Nathaniel Reece; and brothers, Tom Conway, William Conway and James Conway, Sr.
John’s life will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 7, at the Smith-McQuiston & Webster Funeral Home, 321 US 27 South, Fountain City. Interment will follow in Willow Grove Cemetery.
Family & friends may gather for visitation from 4-7 p.m. on Friday, December 6, at the funeral home.
