Juanita H. McGill

   Juanita Helen (Barton) McGill, 95, died peacefully December 13, 2023 at Friends Fellowship Community, her home for the past 22 years. Juanita was the daughter of Wayne and Bessie (Lyle) Barton, the second of five children that included Lyle, Howard, Etta, and Barbara who all preceded her in death.

   She met her husband, Deane McGill, at the gymnasium of the New Castle National Guard Armory, where she was teaching girls PE. They married December 31, 1950 and were married more than 49 years when he died in 2000.

   Juanita is survived by her children Sue (Robert True), Chuck (Gwen), Terry (Diana), and Jeff (Melissa), five grandchildren (Luke, Russ, Clint, Tyler, and Derrick), eight great-grandchildren (Aiden, Miy Ana, Jeremiah, Bentley, Mason, Emma, Silas and Isobel), and several nieces and nephews. She loved them all.

   Juanita graduated from Spartanburg High School in 1946. She was a proud Purdue alum, graduating in the Class of ’50 with a BS in Home Economics Education. (You can find her name on the plaque in the Class of ’50 Lecture Hall at Purdue.) She received her Masters degree from Ball State University in 1963.

   She was a longtime teacher at Richmond Community Schools, teaching Home Economics, Science, and Women’s Physical Education at Pleasant View Jr. High School. She previously taught at Cambridge City, New Lisbon, Straughn, and New Castle school systems.

   Juanita was an accomplished seamstress and adventurous cook. She was an outdoorswoman who loved gardening and being outside whether it was a walking path or a hiking trail. She was an inquisitive lifelong learner.

   Funeral services will be held Friday, December 22 at Smith-McQuiston & Webster Funeral Home, 321 US 27 South, Fountain City, Indiana. Calling will be from 12–2 pm with the funeral to follow. Burial will be at the New Garden Friends Cemetery.
