Mrs. Lavada “Marie†Duke, 87, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday afternoon, January 25, at Golden Living Center Golden Rule.
She was born August 20, 1924 in West Virginia to John S. and Dora J. Kelley Hanshew and lived in Wayne County most of her life. She married Shirley F. Duke, Sr. on November 28, 1941 and they were married for 62 years. She graduated from Economy High School in 1942. She was a member of the Economy Friends Church and was a Past Matron in Eastern Star.
Mrs. Duke is survived by her daughter, Sharon Duke Lipscomb, Richmond; grandchildren, Victoria Duke Mead, Richmond, Lee Lipscomb, Noblesville; Amy Lipscomb Strain, Richmond; Heather Hardy Duke, Richmond; Tara Duke Rains, Maryland; and 13 great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Duke was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Shirley F. Duke, Sr., on March 27, 2004; and son, Shirley F. Duke, Jr., on August 26, 2006.
A memorial ceremony will begin at 3:30 p.m. on Monday, January 30, at the Smith & McQuiston Funeral Home, 321 US 27 South, Fountain City. Interment will follow in Williamsburg Cemetery.
Family and friends may gather 1 hour prior to service.
