Ralph L. Holmes, 86, passed away Thursday, October 20, at Reid Hospital.
He was born November 7, 1924 in Chicago, Illinois to Ralph and Mabel Holmes. He graduated from Richmond High School in 1943, where he was a star basketball player. Because of the war, there was no All-Star Team in Indiana and in 1993, Ralph was recognized as an Indiana All-Star.
He was a US Army veteran of World War Two, serving in combat as an Airborne Infantryman. He returned home after the war and married the former Naomi Mullens in 1948. He retired after a career as an electrician and was a member of the Middleboro United Methodist Church.
Mr. Holmes will be missed by his wife, Naomi Holmes; daughters, Vicki Ann Holmes and Rebecca Vosmeier; son, Michael Holmes; brother, James Holmes; 10 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren and several nieces & nephews.
Mr. Holmes was preceded in death by his parents; 1 son, Rick Holmes, on December 24, 2010; 2 sisters, Mary McClure and Dot Blackford.
A funeral ceremony will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, October 24 at the Smith & McQuiston Funeral Home, 321 US 27 South, Fountain City. Interment will follow in Willow Grove Cemetery, with military rites delivered by the Wayne County Honor Guard.
Family & friends may gather for visitation from 12 noon – 1:00 p.m. Monday, October 24 at the funeral home.
