Richard Lewis

Richard L. "Dick" Lewis, 76, passed away Saturday, February 7, 2009 at his residence.


Born May 3, 1932 in Randolph County, Indiana, he was the son of Joseph Dean Lewis and Wilma Delight Harlan Lewis. He was raised in the Arba Friends Church and graduated Spartanburg High School in 1950. He worked at Johns-Manville briefly before being drafted into the US Army. He served with the 185th Engineer Battalion during the Korean War and was awarded 2 bronze service stars. He returned home to continue his career with Johns-Manville, retiring in 1992.


"Uncle Dick" was a loyal friend and neighbor to many. He helped many children and their families whenever there was a need. He enjoyed attending athletic events and witnessing the achievements of his grandchildren and other members of his family. He was an avid IU basketball fan and enjoyed reading, traveling and helping animals, most recently opening his home to his dog, Ralphy.


Dick will be missed by his son and daughter-in-law, Tim and Becky Keelor, New Madison; grandsons Marc Keelor and Stephen Keelor, both of Indianapolis, and granddaughter Krystle Keelor, New Madison; his sister, Neva Mullins, Richmond; nieces Debra Mullins, Sharon Roberts and her husband, Ron, and Lacinda Lewis, all of Richmond; Carol Ciesielski and her husband, Ron, and Raylena Lewis, all of South Bend; nephews Lloyd Mullins and his wife, Jessie, Richmond, and David Mullins and his wife, Robin, Noblesville.


Dick was preceded in death by his parents as well as 1 brother, Joseph Darrell Lewis and 3 nephews, Brian Dee Mullins, Richard Wayne Mullins and Ronald Dean Lewis.


A funeral ceremony will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, February 11 at the Smith & McQuiston Funeral Home, 321 US 27 South, Fountain City. Interment will follow in Hollansburg Cemetery.


Family and friends may gather for visitation from 4-7 p.m. on Tuesday, February 10, at the funeral home.
