Robert M. "Bob" Harris, 78, passed away on Saturday, August 14, at Reid Hospital.
He was born February 14, 1932 to Joe Dan and Dorothy P. McNutt Harris on the family farm where he lived most of his life. He was a 1950 graduate of Williamsburg High School and entered the US Navy on April 8, 1952. He served aboard the cruiser USS St. Paul during the Korean War and was honorably discharged on February 7, 1954. He married the former Helen Meyers on June 24, 1952.
Bob farmed all of his life and formerly sold feed for Vigortone. He earned the nickname "Gleaner" in some circles for his collection of Gleaner combines. His family was his number one priority and he had just welcomed his first great-grandson into the family 1 week ago. He enjoyed playing his harmonica, the piano and singing. He also enjoyed playing many types of games and telling stories. He was active with the Williamsburg Alumni and the Webster Fellowship Group. Bob was a member of the AMVETS Post 38 and Williamsburg American Legion Post 442.
Bob will be missed by his wife of 58 years, Helen Harris; 2 sons and daughters-in-law, Larry and Tammy Harris, of Dayton, OH and Rodney and Teresa Harris, of Greens Fork; 1 sister and brother-in-law, Barbara and Emery Ellison, of Avon Park, FL; 2 brothers, Roy Harris, of Greens Fork and Reide Harris and his wife, Evelyn, of Greens Fork; 6 granddaughters, Jill (Darren) Etheredge, Katie Harris, Amber (Cameron) Modisette, Lynn (Josh) LaBarge, Ashlee (Ben) Burch and Heather Kern; 6 great-granddaughters, Adele, Rebecca, Ava, Abigail, Margaret and Karrah; 1 great-grandson, Gaige, and several nieces and nephews. He was awaiting the arrival of a 7th great-granddaughter in October.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents and 2 sisters-in-law, Dorothy Harris and Thelma Harris.
A funeral ceremony will be conducted at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, August 17 at the Smith & McQuiston Funeral Home, 321 US 27 South, Fountain City. Interment will follow in Sugar Grove Cemetery with military rites conducted by the Wayne County Honor Guard.
Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Monday, August 16, at the funeral home.
