Born on March 4, 1933, formerly of New York City, passed away peacefully on October 16, 2016 in Richmond, Indiana. She was the daughter of Clara Colean and James W. Stevens. Shirley graduated from Randolph-Macon College with a degree in physics. Determined to live in Manhattan, she then graduated from Katherine Gibbs and spent a brief stint as a secretary. Shirley was hired by a major magazine publisher and began her career as a pioneer in direct marketing. A member of the Direct Marketing Association of New York, she received the prestigious Golden Apple Award in 1997. Shirley enjoyed the arts, music and was an accomplished photographer and guitarist. She will be greatly missed. She is survived by her niece and loving caregiver, Emily Stevens of Richmond, Indiana. Shirley is also survived by two nephews, Peter Lanier Stevens and William Tompkins Stevens. She was preceded in death by her brother, James W. Stevens.
