Virgil James York, 79, passed away on Tuesday, May 26, at his residence.
Born May 9, 1930 in Red House, Kentucky, he was the son of James Frank and Daisy Bullock York. He was married to the former Mary Messer on June 27, 1950. Together they raised 7 children and shared 48 years of marriage until her death on July 25, 1998. Mr. York lived in Richmond most of his life in Richmond and was retired from the City of Richmond Sanitation Department. He was a member of the Faith United Baptist Church in Hagerstown.
Mr. York will be missed by his companion and caregiver, Pam; 2 daughters and sons-in-law, Brenda and Henry Wadsworth and Linda and John Wallace; 5 sons, Michael York and his wife, Donna, Ivan York, Jim York and his wife, Anna Marie, Larry York and his wife, Laura, and Jeff York and his wife, Paula; 13 grandchildren, Mike York, Jr., Derek York, Henry Wadsworth, Jr., John Wadsworth, Mandi Pence, Christina Gardner, Linda Helms, Renae Wickett, John Wallace, Jr., Cody York, Zack York, Jeffery York and Rebecca; 13 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents and wife, Mr. York was preceded in death by a grandson, Ivan Wayne York and 9 brothers and sisters.
A funeral ceremony will be conducted by Pastor John Maples and Pastor Eldon Denny at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 28, at the Fellowship Baptist Church, 655 Salisbury Road South, Richmond. Interment will follow in Willow Grove Cemetery in Fountain City.
Family and friends may gather for visitation from 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 28 at the church.
Memorial contributions may be given to Reid Hospital Foundation for Hospice Care, 1100 Reid Parkway, Richmond, Indiana 47374. Envelopes will be available at the church.
