Virginia "Miss Knight" Knight

Virginia Luella “Miss Knight” Knight, of Fountain City, passed away peacefully on Sunday afternoon, January 19, at the age of 102.

Miss Knight was born on March 30, 1922, in Fountain City, Indiana, to Clayton Raymond & Ima Alberta Fasick Knight. She was a 1941 graduate of Fountain City High School, where she was a Yell Leader from 1936-41 and was crowned Miss Fountain City during her senior year.

Miss Knight spent several years of her early adult life living and working overseas. She served in the American Red Cross in Germany following World War Two. She later worked for the US State Department in Turkey. When it was time to settle, she returned to Fountain City and worked her way through college. She received her Bachelor of Elementary Education degree from Earlham College in 1968. From 1968-1990, Miss Knight taught and was a perennial student favorite at Fountain City Elementary School, Williamsburg Elementary School and finally at the consolidated Northeastern Elementary School. She remained active throughout her retirement years. When she wasn’t obsessively maintaining her property on Green Street, she could be found working with and supporting the Fountain City Park Board. In 1992, she was honored as Grand Marshal of the Levi Coffin Days Parade. When she was well into her 90s, she regularly made the drive into Richmond to swim at the pool at Earlham College.

Miss Knight will always be remembered fondly by her nieces, nephews and many friends and former students, through whom Miss Knight helped to make the world a better place.

Miss Knight was preceded in death by her parents, sisters, Betty Jean Weyle and Marjorie Louise “Mickie” Smith; and brother, Col. Archie Joyce Knight.

Miss Knight requested that no services be held when she passed. Her request was to be buried privately with her parents in Buena Vista Cemetery in Randolph County.

Memorial contributions are encouraged for the Food Bank or Needy Student Fund of Northeastern Wayne School Corp., 7299 North US 27, Fountain City, IN 47341.
